The short answer
Both work in Arizona. Tile lasts longer and looks more premium. Shingle is cheaper upfront and faster to install. The right choice depends on how long you plan to be in the home, your budget, and your neighbourhood's style. There is no universal winner.
How tile performs in the desert
Tile is the longest-lived roofing material in the Sonoran Desert. A properly installed tile roof, with new underlayment and good flashings, will last 40-50 years in Arizona. Tile reflects more sunlight than shingle, so your attic runs cooler. It does not crack from UV, does not warp from heat, and stands up to monsoon winds better than shingle.
The catch with tile
Tile is heavy. Your home's structure has to be specced for it. Tile is also more expensive to install and harder to repair, since matching the colour and profile of older tile is not always possible. The underlayment is also where most tile roofs fail. The tile itself outlasts the underlayment, so a "tile re-roof" is really an underlayment re-do every 20-25 years.
How shingle performs in the desert
A modern architectural shingle, installed with high-temp synthetic underlayment, will last 15-20 years in Tucson. It is faster to install, easier to repair, and far cheaper upfront. The downside is that it does fail eventually, and when it does, you replace the whole roof, not just the underlayment.
How to choose
Choose tile if: you plan to be in the home long-term, you live in the Foothills or Oro Valley where tile is the architectural standard, and your structure is already rated for tile load. Choose shingle if: you want lower upfront cost, you are in a newer subdivision where shingle is standard, or you plan to sell within 10-15 years.
What we recommend
For most Tucson homeowners, the right call is whatever matches your neighbourhood and your structure. If your house was built for tile, stay with tile. If it was built for shingle, stay with shingle. Switching roof types is rarely worth the cost. Call us at (520) 703-0072 and we will walk you through the right call for your specific home.
